The University of Kansas Health System

Making You Stronger, Faster and Healthier

Mellissa Allen and her daughter, MaddieIt just got easier and more convenient to improve your athletic performance or recover from a sports-related injury – no matter your age, background or activity.

The newest Sports Medicine and Performance Center location at 125th Street and Antioch Road in Overland Park, Kansas, offers world-class care in all areas of sports performance.

Here, healthy athletes improve their strength, speed and agility with group classes, personal training and nutrition counseling. Injured athletes receive physical therapy from experts at The University of Kansas Health System.

Mellissa Allen, her husband, Dave, and their children, Maddie and Nick, train at the facility. "We choose to come here because of the personal attention and professionalism," Mellissa says. "Each staff member is a trained and certified strength and conditioning coach, so they ensure you're using the proper form. Their expertise really helps lessen the chance of injury."

A competitive edge

As an academic health system, our physicians and care providers are at the forefront of sports medicine, which provides athletes with a key advantage.

"We work as a collaborative team," says Charlie Rozanski, vice president of orthopedics and sports medicine. "Our strength and conditioning coaches consult with our physicians, physical therapists and athletic trainers to develop programming that aligns with the best practices in the field."

With a state-of-the-art weight room, indoor and outdoor turf fields and 20-foot ceilings, the facility offers a "game-day" environment for healthy athletes to train or injured athletes to recover. For example, soccer players can pivot, golfers can tee up and quarterbacks can throw long.

"On-site physical therapy is definitely a bonus," says Mellissa. "My muscles were tight the other day and a physical therapist taught me a different sort of stretch."

Sports nutrition rounds out the comprehensive performance program.

Personalized consultations, designed specifically to improve sports performance, are also available.

"I'd recommend this performance center to anyone," says Mellissa. "The safety and supervision gives me peace of mind as an athlete as well as a parent of children involved in sports."
